Tuesday Morning Patron

Jim Tammen will be coming in Tuesday morning to look at photos of Plant Pathology faculty members.  There is a cart with many PorVF boxes in the hallway for him, along with the list of faculty members that he provided.  I pulled the boxes up to J.W. Oswald, so when he has gone through the first few boxes, the remaining boxes can be pulled for him.

Thanks, Paul D.

Audio/Visual room

I've made up a list of A/V formats that our machines can handle in the A/V room. I put the list on the Reference Desk, near the printer. If you have any questions, etc., please let me know.  Thanks.

Sherwin Barton Collection

Dear All,

Leslie Hammons, a graduate assistant affiliated with the Palmer Art Musuem, will be visiting Special Collection after Labor Day to  photograph (with her own digital camera) and photocopy items contained within the Sherwin Barton World War II Collection.  Her supervisor, Robin Seymour, Coordinator of Membership and Public Relations, Palmer Art Musue, will be coordinating her use of the collection.   They are permitted full access to the Barton Collection and can photograph using their own digital camera.  Regarding the photocopying of fragile collection materials (including any original drawings, art work and Barton's P.O.W. war diary), they have been instructed to consult with a HCLA staff member to make arrangements for staff-assistant copying if necessary--especially pages from the P.O.W. war diary.   If items being photocopied require use of the hinged photocopy machine please consult with Sandy and Rare Books to make arrangements for use of the copier.

The Barton Collection, consisting of two document cases and one scrapbook case, have been placed on the small table near the back of the hold room for retrieval when Leslie arrives in Special Collections.

UMWA Patron

Dear All,

Dr. James Lebda will be visiting Special Collections this week to use three boxes of United Mine Workers of America material from the Secretary-Treasurer's Office Record Subgroup.  The boxes (AXHCLA 00967,00969, 00971) have been placed on a cart with Dr. Lebda's patron registration form in the holding area behind the entrance doors to the reference room.  Dr. Lebda is permitted to make photocopies of the materials which consist of district dues and financial ledger sheets.  Staff, please advise Dr. Lebda to be careful to maintain the original order of the sheets when removing individual sheets for photocopying.

books on hold for scanning

It's 5:00 on Friday, and I am putting into the on-hold room a small book truck of materials that Ed was going to give to Paul Karwacki for scanning for a patron, Mr. Robert Frank. Paul was expecting to scan the books on Monday, but many of them are rare books that can't be scanned on the flatbed scanner. I'm putting all of the books (including some HCLA items) on hold with this note and my business card for Mr. Frank, who will be returning next week:

"Mr. Frank: If you would like to have scans made from any Rare Books materials, we can talk about having that done in our Preservation Department. (We generally don’t allow rare-book materials to be flipped over on a flatbed scanner.) It’s more expensive to have scans made with the overhead camera in Preservation, and I wanted you to be aware of that before we actually placed any orders for you. If you would like to take your own overhead photos of rare books, that would be fine."

Please remember that all scanning requests from Rare Books and Manuscripts materials must go through a Rare Books staff member. Many times it's fine for us to make scans on ouir flatbed scanner, but we want to make those decisions based on the condition of the book, on a case-by-case basis.

Pittsburgh Club

Erin Spanier-Evers, from the Alumni Association
may be stopping by sometime to investigate the
Pittsburgh Club which later becameThe Allegheny
Chapter. She believes it was the first club started.

http://www.alumni.psu.edu/about_us/History/Default.htm

First Penn State alumni chapter established, in Pittsburgh

I wasn’t able to locate any directly relevant information.
I tried through Oliver. Paul found a CSI Section called
“Alumni Association Clubs,” with an article about smokers
with a later date. He noted that a Collegian or Froth article
might yield some information

Erin is going to look in their own archives and may
have leads when she comes.

He (they) can go through the folder but cannot borrow any photo's. If he has any questions or needs help in any way, please get either Paul K. or Paul D. Thanks, Paul K.
