Dance Marathon Photo Project

Students representing the Dance Marathon will be coming in to choose and scan photos for the 35th anniversary of Thon over the next several weeks.  Their plan is to first choose the photos that they will scan, then come back in subsequent visits to do the scanning.  I told the Thon representative our procedures for photo projects and using the public scanner, especially that it is first come, first  served service.

Since they are working with the photos, I told them that the photo boxes would be put away after they were finished each day because the photo collection is so heavily used.  I gave them the list of boxes and their locations to give to whomever is working at the reference desk.  Here is the list of boxes and locations:

Black & white photos - PVF/Students/Boxes 28 & 29

Color photos - PVF/Color/Students/Boxes 3, 4, 5 (in GCS)

Oversized black & white photos - PVF/Students/Box 3 (in GST/B03)

Oversized color photos - PVF/Color/Students/Box 1 (in GCS)

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,

Paul D.

History 302 Materials

The two carts of Boalsburg materials for Dr. Sally McMurry's History 302 class have been removed from the Eighth Air Force Room and placed in the Hold Room for class use in the Reading Room.  Students will no longer be permitted to use these materials in the Eighth Air Force Room.  As before, HCLA and University Archives materials may be photocopied.  Photocopy requests for Rare Books material on the carts still require the permission of Rare Books and all arrangements for photoduplication are to be coordinated with the Rare Books staff.  As the semester draws to a close there will probably be a surge in the use of these collections materials as students complete and revise their project papers.

Doors Broken

The double doors into Technical Services are broken. You won't be able to use your key to open the doors.
Tom has come to check them and says he had to submit a request to OPP to have them fixed. He said they usually come pretty quickly to fix these problems so we can only hope that they do. So for now we'll have to go
around through the front doors to get into Technical Services. We can still get in from the other side. Lee G.

Steele Nowlin will be in Weds. Nov. 15th to pick up the Ellesmere Chaucer facsimile. He should be in around 12:45 I believe. It is already checked out to him and the book is sitting on the Rare Books reshelving shelves. It is an oversized book and is wrapped in a large clear plastic bag. If you can't find one of the Rare Books' folks you can give him the book to take. He will bring it back right after his class. Thanks, Lee G.--

Thomas Mann on hold

All--

Professor Smita Sen's religious studies class appears to have a reading assignment due on Friday. There were students here today looking at our two copies of Thomas Mann's *The Tables of the Law* that are on hold. Please treat requests for photocopies as you would for any other request:  Photocopies of Rare Books and Manuscripts materials are to be made by RBM staff only. We'll try to do them as soon as possible. If you can't immediately find an RBM staff member, please ask the students to stop back later in the day.

This rule applies to all RBM photocopy requests in general.  We can usually handle requests on the spot, but occasionally we will have to ask patrons to return for their photocopies, just as we would for scanning or annex requests.

Thanks! Sandy

Reminder

I just wanted to remind everyone that when you close up at night to put whatever materials the patron(s) were using either in the On Hold areas or back on the reshelving shelves. Also remember to turn the lights out in the Ground Floor stacks and lock the the door before you set the alarm. Another exit that sometimes doesn't have the alarm reset is the one that goes back into the Libraries technical services area. Those double doors are opened often during the day and many times the alarm is not on at the end of the day. Please remember to check and set the alarm before you leave.  Thanks, Lee--

Cuneiform tablet exhibit

I've been asked by Professor Ken Hirth once again to install a temporary exhibit of our cuneiform tablets for his Anthropology students to see. The tablets are now in the exhibit case that normally houses the Book of Kells. I hope that desk staff won't be asked to do anything but point students in the right direction. The students will have an assignment based on what's in the cases. The exhibit will be up for only two weeks.   The Book of Kells is in the vault while the exhibit case is being used for this other purpose.

When in Doubt...

Some reference advice --

If you can't find a Biographical or Photo file within PSUA, ask a PSUA staff member.  But keep in mind that when a person has two last names, search under both.  For ex., Edith Pitt Chace is categorized under Chace not Pitt. So no there are no photos of her under P but that doesn't mean we have no photos.

In addition, sometimes a person's file reflects that fact that they have a real first name rather than the name they use in natural language.  For example, Jesse Arnelle (former Board of Trustees member and ex-basketball player) is filed under ARH because his real first name begins with an H.

Since anomalies like the ones mentioned above happen, it is better to state to the patron that you will check with the unit authorities and get back to them rather than say "Special Collections doesn't have..."  Those words should be used sparingly.
