SAA workshop, Mon., Mar. 26

For those of you registered for the DACS (Describing Archives: A Content Standard) workshop on Monday, March 26, please remember that this workshop starts at 8:30 a.m. rather than the usual start time of 9:00 a.m. at the instructor's request.  Please do the three short exercises and the readings before Monday so you can participate in meaningful discussions and not feel lost.  We have implemented DACS here and need to have everyone up to speed and on the same page of understanding as we clean up Oliver to comply and move forward with describing new collections using DACS.

For those of you who are not attending the workshop, please respect the learning environment of your colleagues and do not interrupt the workshop to pull them out for work issues--phone calls, reference, retrieval; act as if the workshop is being held off-site and they cannot be reached.  Nothing is that much of a crisis that it cannot wait until Tuesday or be handled by another staff person.

Thanks for everyone's cooperation in making the workshops successful.

Anslinger Papers Microfilming Project

Dear All,

Preparations are underway for the Anslinger Papers microfilming project.  Preliminary estimates by Preservation point to the cost of the project exceeding our current budgeting capability but we are proceeding with the project with full expectation of completing microfilming in phases.

For now, Sue and her staff will need access to the papers (13 boxes) do a sampling of the content.  I have placed the boxes in the Eighth Air Force Room for their retrieval and use within that room.  I have alerted them about our use of the room for meetings and they will  schedule their sampling sessions around our meetings should there be any conflict.  For now, should patrons request access to the collection just retrieve the requested box(es) from the Eighth Air Force Room.

I will send out a message alerting all when the boxes are removed from Special Collections for microfilm.  It may take several weeks before this happens but I wanted to give everyone a heads-up.

Martha Verbrugge, from Bucknell University, will be visiting on Friday morning to look at the Dorothy Harris Papers.  A cart is in the hallway with her name on it, along with the list of boxes that she requested.

Most of the boxes are on the cart, though a few are in the hallway by the back door, just arriving from the annex.

Some of the boxes are on Shea Moore’s cart.  She is one of the interns who is working on the collection.

Thanks,
Paul D.
